How overtime works in California
California has the strongest overtime rules in the country. You earn overtime (1.5× your rate) for any hours over 8 in a single workday, and double time (2×) for hours over 12 in a day. If you work all 7 days of a workweek, the first 8 hours on the 7th day are overtime and anything beyond is double time. The weekly rule applies too: hours over 40 in the week that are not already paid at a premium earn 1.5×. Your employer must use whichever calculation pays you more — and no hour is ever counted twice.

Worked example: a California paycheck
A California worker earning the state minimum wage, $16.90 an hour, working Mon 10h, Tue 10h, Wed 10h, Thu 10h — 40 hours in the week:
- Regular: 32 hours × $16.90 = $540.80.
- Overtime (1.5×): 8 hours × $25.35 = $202.80.
- Under the federal rule alone (no daily overtime), the same 40 hours would pay just 40 × $16.90 = $676.00 — so California’s daily rule adds $67.60 to this week’s pay.
Total gross for the week: $743.60.

Is this calculator accurate for California?
It applies the overtime rules described above with the same maths payroll systems use, and nothing you type ever leaves your device. It is still an estimate: exemptions, union contracts and local city rules can change what your employer owes, so your employer’s official record is what counts.
