Worked example
A job offers $52,000 a year for a 40-hour week. Is that better than $24 an hour?
- Hours in a year: 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours.
- $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00 an hour — so yes, the salary pays $1 an hour more.
- That salary is $1,000 a week, $2,000 every two weeks, and about $4,333 a month.
The formula
Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year). Annual salary = hourly rate × hours per week × weeks per year. Monthly = annual ÷ 12; biweekly = annual ÷ 26.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?
Divide the annual salary by the number of hours you work in a year. For a full-time schedule of 40 hours a week and 52 weeks a year, that is 2,080 hours — so a $52,000 salary is $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25 an hour.
How many work hours are in a year?
A standard full-time year is 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours. If you get unpaid time off, use fewer weeks — for example 50 weeks = 2,000 hours — which makes the true hourly rate higher.
What is $25 an hour annually?
$25 an hour at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is $52,000 a year — $1,000 a week, $2,000 biweekly and about $4,333 a month.
Is biweekly pay the same as twice a month?
No. Biweekly means every two weeks — 26 paychecks a year. Twice a month (semi-monthly) is 24 paychecks. That is why a biweekly check is a little smaller than a semi-monthly check on the same salary.
