How overtime works in Alaska
Alaska requires overtime at 1.5× your regular rate for hours over 8 in a single workday, in addition to the federal weekly rule of 40 hours. If either calculation gives you overtime, you are paid the higher result — a long single day earns a premium even in a short week. (Employers with fewer than four employees are exempt from the daily requirement, and some farm, fishery and transport jobs are exempt too.)

Worked example: a Alaska paycheck
A Alaska worker earning the state minimum wage, $14.00 an hour, working Mon 9h, Tue 8h, Wed 8h, Thu 8h, Fri 8h — 41 hours in the week:
- Regular: 40 hours × $14.00 = $560.00.
- Overtime (1.5×): 1 hours × $21.00 = $21.00.
Total gross for the week: $581.00.
